The late Princess Diana is back in the news with her two-decade-old tapes out in the open twenty years after her demise. She speaks unabashedly, almost unapologetically about her life as a royal, her unfulfilling marriage and her emotional attachment with the late Barry Mannakee.
Recorded between the years 1992 and 1993, shortly after she fell out with her husband, the late Royal’s recordings have her talking uninhibitedly about her romance and subsequent marriage to Prince Charles. She was advancing nineteen years of age when she first met the prince who was pining over the separation from then ladylove. She showed him commiseration and they began dating. He was a passionate lover and ‘all over’ her as she puts it. She also calls him peculiar because he was not very consistent with his demonstrations of amour.
They met a paltry thirteen times prior to their marriage after which her life changed entirely. She had two sons, her husband almost abandoned her for another woman. Camilla-, the monarch -who was also her mother-in-law- refused to intercede to save her son’s marriage.
She was emotionally shattered and longed for understanding and empathy. She received none and was diagnosed with bulimia. The Royals almost ostracized her.
She found a friend in Mannakee who worked for her family and was akin to a parent to her. She admits to being extremely fond of him. Once her penchant for him became known, he was fired and died shortly after.
Consequently, she was discredited and Camilla promoted. She had wanted nothing besides her man’s affection, she received everything sans that!
Despite everything, she continues to be championed by those who knew her. With her kindly heart and blunt candour, she was loved by her people. And that’s her legacy which will live on, untarnished, forever!
