This adorable little animal is called Ili Pika. Scientists suspect it to be related to rabbits although not much data can be found since it’s so rare.
This unique looking rabbit is found in the Tianshian mountains of northwestern China and it’s one of the most endangered animal species on the planet!
Although it doesn’t look like your typical bunny rabbit with its smaller more round ears it’s still pretty darn cute! It looks like a mix between a koala bear and a rabbit.
Here you can see
some of the first images in 20 years of this endangered animal.
Conservationist Weidong Li was the first to discover this magical creature in 1983, and now
after 20 long years he has found it again. Ili Pika was officially classified
as “Ochotona iliensis” but named Ili after Li’s hometown.
Since the discovery of Ili Pika, their population is estimated to have dropped by 70%, now they are less than 1000! Li Weidong, the man who discovered them said he would feel so guilty if the “magical rabbit” becomes extinct in front of him.
The passion this man has for this tiny little creature is amazing, he retired
early and dedicated his whole life observing and studying the animal.
So what is causing their decline in population? Li Weidong and his volunteers suspects it’s due to global warming caused by humans. And at the moment there is no official organization dedicated in the study or conservation of the Ili Pika. But Li is hoping these new images of this beautiful little animal will raise awareness and that more people will join him and his team in protecting the species from extinction.

endangered animal before it becomes extinct.
