When it comes to instincts, no doubt the mother is one of the most successful, and this story is a faithful proof of it.
Tammy Gonzalez is a resident of Miami, Florida, who was very excited about her pregnancy. From the time she learned she was pregnant she began her routine checkup as it should be.
All was well until one day, when she had the ultrasound between month 5 and 6, she observed in the image a strange bubble that she had not seen before, on top of the mouth of her baby.
She consulted with the doctors if everything was okay, however at the time they could not respond.
After more tests and investigations, the doctors discovered that it was a rare tumor that is almost always fatal, called Teratoma, and it usually appears in 1 of 100,000 children during pregnancy.
The hopes were not many, given that in almost all the known cases of this tumor, the children die before even being born. So, the doctors recommended to abort. However, Tammy decided to continue her pregnancy, confident that her doctors could do something to save her precious baby.
After much research and not losing hope, Tammy found that there was something to do. A surgical procedure called endoscopic surgery could be performed, by which doctors could remove the tumor. However, it was something they had never tried in such a case.
But she insisted, until a doctor at Jackson Memorial Hospital agreed to do the surgery even though he had never done it. But he dared because he wanted to help Tammy. With a small incision in the amniotic sac he managed to access the tumor and remove it from the baby's mouth.
Although he could not remove the tumor because the incision had to be very small, the tumor no longer posed danger to either Tammy or her little one.
4 months later the baby was born, and the tumor was also expelled. The girl came into the world completely healthy, with only a small scar on her lips, which, thanks to Tammy's doctor and perseverance, did not pose any difficulty.
