Every nation has its own culture, traditions and, of
What do the peoples of the North feed on: the Nenets, the Chukchi, and the Eskimos? How do they live in such cold weather?
We invite you to find out about the most famous national dish of these peoples - kopalchen. Be careful, do not try this meat delicacy, our stomachs are not prepared for this...
Kopalchen is made from meat of fresh venison, walrus, seal or whale. The whole family will have enough of one prepared carcass for a few weeks or even months. First, you need to "kill" the animal in a correct way.
If it is a deer, the strongest of the herd is beaten off and taken home. It is not fed (so that the stomach of the beast is cleansed), and then suffocated, so carefully to not to damage the skin. The carcass is placed in a swamp, sprinkled with its turf. They store it under water for 6 months or more. In the winter they dig it out and eat it.
The people of the North are happy to eat the kopalchen, they are not bothered by the fact that the meat decays after so many months. Thanks to this dish, the Eskimos and Nenets can work for a long time in the cold, they are warm, and they are full of strength and energy.
By the way, children are taught to Kopalchen from
childhood. Infants are given a piece of meat or fat, so that they can later eat
it without the threat of poisoning. The rotten meat contains cadaveric poison,
so the tourists shouldn’t risk.
