When Melanie and Doug Pritchard were preparing to have their first child, they searched for a doctor who would fight, if necessary, for both Melanie and the baby's lives Melanie and Doug Pritchard prepared themselves to have their first child.
The couple searched for a doctor, who could, if necessary, fight for both mother’s and baby’s lives.
They even did not think, what a big role this choice would play.
This was Melanie’s second pregnancy and the gestation course was quite smooth. Melanie with her husband even walked to the hospital, when she began having contractions on the 39th week of pregnancy.
The doctor waited till their intensification of contractions, and then the water broke. Precisely from this moment something went wrong.
Even during normal human life Melanie felt sick and faint. Then she passed out. Heart rate and blood pressure dropped to zero. It turned completely blue.
The same vital signs of the unborn daughter plummeted precipitously as well.
It was announced about Melanie’s clinical death in the hospital. To save a child, who still was inside her body, doctors immediately proceeded to surgery. The carried out emergency caesarean section.
Doug prayed for salvation of her wife and daughter. He has never felt so desperate and scared in his life. In his prayer requests he asked the God: “Lord, I know, that this is more, than I can bear. I trust in You, please, if You willing so, let me hug my wife again”.
He phoned the family and friends and begged them to pray for Melanie and his daughter.
They, in turn, asked by means of social networking on the web other people to pray for them. All this situation became immediately public on the Internet.
The same day the Pritchards were caught in the top 100 of the most discussible topics in Google and Twitter! In 15 hours over 150 000 people were praying for them and sharing information about this situation with the entire world.
Fortunately, the medical team could save a child. At the same time other doctors tried to bring back Melanie to life. When nurses asked Doug, what named he would give to his daughter, he answered: “Gabriella, that means “The Stronghold of God”.
It was thought, that Melanie was dead for 10 minutes. Doctors used defibrillator 4 times and made closed-chest massage all the time. But these manipulations were unsuccessful.
The family was advised to screw themselves up to say goodbye with the mother of child. However, the doctor noticed weak heartbeating.
Melanie had suffered an amniotic fluid embolism. Amniotic fluid had escaped, they traveled into her bloodstream, and caused a cardiac arrest.
She also suffered massive internal bleeding from the cesarean operation. The doctors also told Doug about possible neurologic problems she would probably have for the rest of life, because she had been without oxygen for over 10 minutes.
Doug came to Melanie’s bed, where her life was supported by special equipment, took her hand and said: “I love you. I will always love you. Brady and Gabriella are beautiful and love you. If you have any fight left, then fight … Promise me that you will follow your guardian angel wherever he leads you. Where he leads you will be where God needs you”.
But was getting worse and worse. Melanie needed two blood transfusions, and she was transferred to another hospital.
During the emergency caesarean section, the artery was severed, and it was found out, that veins were clogged because of the clotted blood. Because of this, it was necessary to carry out more complicated surgery.
The heart functioned only 5% of its capacity (with a minimum of 55-65%). Her lungs failed as a result of cardiac arrest, so 100% of breathing was completely supported by an artificial lung ventilation apparatus.
In order to help Melanie during the surgery, doctors showed her a picture pf Gabriella. Melanie moved and desperately screamed out.
She was brought to the surgery room under anesthesia. This gifted a new hope to the constantly praying family. A real miracle!
The surgery was effective, and Melanie escaped death. The priest who had married Melanie and Doug years earlier visited the hospital and reminded Doug, "That's what you said “yes to” in marriage: in joy and in sorrow, in sickness and in health”.
In the next 24 hours after surgery Melanie began to breath better, she did not need an artificial lung ventilation apparatus anymore.
She opened her eyes and fully conscious asked to call for her husband and daughter.
Nurses brought Gabriella, and Melanie even was able to hold her daughter for the first time more than 48 hours after the fight for her life. Melanie’s rehabilitation struck the entire staff.
He was discharged from the hospital in six days after the emergency. During the next weeks she made a completely recovery.
“Although I do not remember this amazing event in my life, I am grateful to be alive and hug my husband and children in my arms every day”, Melanie wrote in her book a few years later.
“I am grateful for each post made on Facebook, Twitter, and articles that have been written and posted on the internet, and especially to those who prayed and shared with others to pray for me, a stranger.
Words cannot express my gratitude for the multitude of prayers that covered me in this traumatic event. I am happy to say that the prayers worked!
Thanks to doctors' hands, nurses, blood donors, and a merciful God, Gabriella and I are alive and well, and I recovered completely. "
