A blind man married a woman and could not see her.
He talked with his beloved son and did not know how
pretty his face looked. So it was before a TV show gave him an opportunity to
see the world.
A wise proverb says "The eyes are the windows to the soul".
With vision, we have a clear perspective of colors, depth, and shadow.
We enjoy life more because light and colors have a positive effect on us.
With sight, we can
know where we are and identify things that are familiar to us.
Unfortunately, some people are born unable to see or they lose vision due to illness or accident. These people do not have the luck to see even the faces of their loved ones. Daily, they live their lives in darkness.
One of the most common causes of blindness is Stargardt's disease. This hereditary disease attacks the retina, causing a partial loss of the vision of those who suffer it, preventing them from seeing what they have in front of them.
Sometimes, the disease can cause complete blindness, when it affects the entire visual field.
Gene Purdie has been suffering from this disease for 15 years. It is one of the few cases, where the complete vision has been lost. He can only see people's silhouettes, but not able to identify their faces. Although he is married and has a son, he has never been able to see their faces.
When they were engaged, Purdie spent several times with his future wife, as if he were ignoring her.
Once she asked him: “What's wrong with you?”, thinking that Purdie ignored her.
However, sometimes his illness did not allow him to recognize people passing by him. It was when Purdie told her about his illness.
The things that can
be easy for anyone can become a real challenge for Purdie. His wife admires her
husband's perseverance despite his condition. Although doctors told him that
his condition had no cure, he always hoped to be able to see someday.
Purdie's wife watched an episode of the Rachael Ray Show, where a woman with Stargardt's disease wore electronic glasses that allowed her to see for the fіrst tіme. Joy did not think twice and made contact with the show.
Joy contacted the producers of the program, who agreed to give Purdie a chance. He himself said, moments before wearing the glasses: "I do not think there are words to describe the moment when I see my family for the first time."
Taylor West, a representative of the eSight company presented the lenses to Purdie. This invention allows people with Stargardt's disease to see well.
Purdie was looking forward to putting on those glasses to see his family.
Thankfully, the man
was able to see clearly his wife`s and son`s faces. He exclaimed:
"Heavens, she’s beautiful!", when seeing his wife. Tears came to his
eyes and Purdie got sentimental. The audience could not help but feel moved
Then, Purdie looked at the audience and was able to recognize familiar faces. Purdie's parents were there!
The eSight company gave the glasses to Purdie so he could continue to see his family as a normal person would. The cost of the device is around $15,000.
This man really
understands the value of seeing the faces of his loved ones, even for an
